Why You Should Travel to Taitung

Some of my most memorable moments in Taiwan have been from Taitung. It is a place to slow down and enjoy a refreshing mix of culture and nature. Riding a motorcycle is probably the best way to get around, traveling from the city and making stops along the coast.

I planned my trips around indigenous festivals I wanted to attend, which I highly recommend. There are harvest festivals throughout summer months where people wear traditional clothing and gather to celebrate, eat, sing, and dance.

Amis Music Festival is held in November and is an unforgettable experience with traditional dance performances as well as live bands, food vendors, and local artisans. When I went, it was held in the town of Dulan on a vast field overlooking the ocean with views of the mountains behind.

These were a few of my favorite vendors selling handmade jewelry and other accessories:

Across the street from the venue was the Dulan Sugar Factory Cafe and Art Gallery. It’s a small cultural center transformed from a sugar factory that features indigenous art, handicrafts, and live music.

Closer to Taitung City, I recommend visiting Taitung Forest Park. You can rent a bike to ride through the different areas of the park- some parts made me feel like I wasn’t even in Taiwan.

You can also find a path to the beach, one where art meets nature.

Not too far from Taitung Forest Park is Xiaoyeliu, a spot along the sea with unique rock formations. It is also home to one of the coolest trees.

Lastly, I think the hospitality in Taitung is an experience in itself. I stayed in a converted tube that I found through Airbnb. There were other hostels on the same road and we all bbq’d together at night. In the morning, I watched the sun rise over the fishing harbor.

I hope this has convinced you to consider a trip to the southeastern part of Taiwan! If you like surfing, hiking, or going to hot springs, there are many more places throughout Taitung to enjoy. There is really something for everyone!
